Camelot 30K is a hard science fiction novel by American physicist Robert L. Forward, released in 1993 by Tor Books. The story centers on humanity's first contact with intelligent aliens inhabiting a frozen world with an average temperature of 30 K (−240 °C). Forward employs exotic low-temperature chemistry to account for the aliens' biology and anatomy.

In 2009, humans detect a signal from beyond Neptune and Pluto, originating from 1999 ZX, a Kuiper belt object 35 AU from the Sun. Twenty years later, a scientific team is sent to this small, ice-bound planetoid in the Oort cloud. The world has a thin hydrogen atmosphere near vacuum, with an average temperature of 30 K, where only hydrogen, helium, and neon remain gaseous; nearly everything else is solid. Despite these conditions, life thrives: the keracks, a few centimeters long, resemble "large one-eyed prawns dressed in elaborate clothing." They have built small cities on their planetoid, which they call "Ice," and developed a collectivistic, hive-like society with a culture reminiscent of King Arthur's England.

First contact occurs with Merlene, a female kerack wizard from the city of Camalor. Humans, too large and hot for direct interaction, use telebots to communicate with Merlene and other keracks. Merlene grows fond of conversing with the humans, and both sides learn about each other's worlds. Humans teach Merlene science and technology to advance her race. The scientists also discover the keracks' energy source: each kerack secretes an internal uranium pellet, moderated by a boron-rich carapace to provide warmth. When a kerack dies, its pellet is stockpiled by the colony's queen. The humans uncover a tragic cycle: when enough pellets accumulate, the queen instinctively arranges them to trigger a nuclear explosion, blasting kerack spores off the object to colonize others. Since the colony is destroyed, no living kerack knows this fate. The book ends with Merlene traveling to warn other colonies about the dangers of their growing stockpiles.

The name "1999 ZX" is impossible under minor planet naming conventions, as such a designation does not exist.
